This page collects pointers to research groups which are directly involved in the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Groups are listed in alphabetical order within each respective geographic area.

For each group, please provide name, home institution, web pointer, and contact person. If possible, also provide a very short description on why the work of this goup is relevant to AI and Robotics. In order to keep the list below relevant and concise, please:
  • Keep the grop description very short, three lines should suffice.
  • Do not list here goups whose main focus is either AI or Robotics alone, and not their integration.
  • If you are in doubt whether or not a group fits this list, a good heuristic is to look at the topics addressed by the IJCAI and the ICRA/IROS conference series. If the research activities of the group cover both topics in IJCAI and topics in ICRA/IROS, then that group should be listed here! If not, it should probably be listed somewhere else.


AASS, Örebro University, Sweden

  • Synopsis: AASS is the "Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems" at Örebro University, Sweden. AASS is one of the largest research centers on autonomous robotics in Scandinavia, it collaborates with world leading companies, and it is involved in about ten EU projects. The main application areas include field and service robotics, and robotics for elder care.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": Since its creation in 1998, AASS has put a major empasis on the integration of AI techniques into real robotic systems. This integration is perceived by many as the trademark of AASS.

AIRLab, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

  • Synopsis: AIRLab (AI and Robotics Lab) was established in 1973 by Marco Somalvico as a group of researchers working the AI and Robotcs field. It has been involved in EU projects since the first ESPRIT program. Many autonomous robots have been developed at AIRLab (the first demonstrated also at IJCAI87, in Milan, Local chair Somalvico), integrating AI techniques in robots for control, planning, data interpretation, world modeling, and learning. The main applications faced are: entertainment, logistic, exploration, rehabilitation, and assistive robots, as well as autonomous vehicles including outdoor UGV and UAV.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": Since 1973 we are integrating AI and Robotics in the development of autonomous robots and devices.

Intelligent Robotics Lab, University of Birmingham, UK

  • Synopsis: The research efforts in the IRLab are directed towards producing autonomous systems which can operate robustly and intelligently in the real world. The lab has been involved in various EU projects from FP6 onwards. Its main research interests include robot architectures for autonomy, behaviour planning and reasoning under uncertainty or in a continual fashion, manipulation and vision for manipulation.

Intelligent Robots and Systems group, ISR@Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal

  • Synopsis:The IRS group R&D approaches complex systems from a holistic standpoint, rather than focusing on some of the subsystems. The topic of cooperation (among agents and/or robots, among robots and humans) arises naturally from this viewpoint. Enabling disciplines of the group research include (cooperative) robot navigation, cooperative perception, planning under uncertainty, human-robot interaction, discrete event systems, bio-inspired approaches and cognitive architectures, applied to networked robot systems, remote handling systems, kinematically complex robots, field robots co-bots and soccer robots.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": The background of the group senior members mixes Artificial Intelligence concepts with formal approaches that stem from Systems and Control Theory and from Operations Research, and has been mostly applied to robot systems.

Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems (L-CAS), University of Lincoln, UK

  • Synopsis: This research aims to integrate various aspects of machines, computing, sensing and software to create intelligent systems capable of interacting with the complexities of the real world. ‘Autonomy’ refers to the ability of a system to solve tasks and handle situations unforeseen by the original designers of the system. L-CAS specialises in the integration of perception, learning, decision-making and control capabilities in autonomous systems such as mobile robots and smart devices, together with the application of this research in fields including personal robotics, food and agriculture, security and surveillance, environment monitoring, games and simulation technology, and intelligent transportation.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": We are working on robots that gather and exploit tong-term experience in their decision-making and their interaction with humans and the rest of their environment, among others in the STRANDS FP7 IP.

The MAVERICK Research Group, Bar Ilan University, Israel

  • Synopsis: The MAVERICK (Multiple Agents, Virtual Environments, Robotics, Intelligence, Cooperation, and Knowledge) investigates intelligence and cognition in virtual and physical robots, with a particular bias towards social intelligence and teamwork multi-robot systems. We also investigate cognitive modeling in groups and crowds, intention and plan recognition.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": We are focusing in particular on investigating the mechanisms that allow the social mind to arise in a synthetic brain. What components have to be built, and connected, so that an individual mind becomes social, and can regard and interact with others?

Ro.Co.Co. Lab, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy

  • Synopsis: RoCoCo (Cognitive Cooperating Robots) laboratory at DIAG (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Informatica, Automatica e Gestionale) of Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) is involved in research and educational activities in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.Members of RoCoCo lab contribute to many research projects and provide support to the courses of the Master in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, offered at Sapienza University of Rome.
  • Relevance to "AI and Robotics": Integration of AI techniques into real robotic systems has been implemented and evaluated in many application scenarios, from soccer robots involved in the RoboCup competitions (since 1998) to industrial and surveillance applications.
